China Clay

Kaolin, also known as china clay,  is a clay mineral, part of the group of industrial minerals, with the chemical composition Al2Si2O5(OH)4 primarily composed of the mineral kaolinite. It is formed through the weathering of aluminum-rich rocks, typically feldspar, and is characterized by its fine particle size and white color. It is a layered silicate mineral, with one tetrahedral sheet linked through oxygen atoms to one octahedral sheet of alumina octahedral.

The physical and chemical properties of China clay make it a darling material for many industries. Whether it is used as a primary content in the ceramic industry or filler in various industries it is always in high demand. China clay is used in paint, paper, rubber, cosmetics, animal feed, pharma, latex, ink, ceramic, tableware, refractory, and toothpaste.

Property Description
Composition Primarily composed of kaolinite clay minerals
Color Typically white, but can also be shades of gray or pink
Texture Soft, fine-grained, and powdery
Plasticity Low plasticity, less malleable compared to ball clay
Firing Temperature High firing temperature, without excessive shrinkage.
Shrinkage Low shrinkage during drying and firing
Porosity Low porosity after firing
Water Absorption Relatively low water absorption
Particle Size Fine particle size distribution
Cation Exchange Capacity Low CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity)
Chemical Stability Chemically inert, stable in most glazes and clays

China clay’s properties make it a valuable material in the ceramics industry. It is also used in various other industries, including papermaking, plastics, and cosmetics, due to its fine particle size and chemical stability.
