Bentonite

Bentonite is naturally occurring hydrated Aluminum Silicate primarily composed of montmorillonite, a fine-grained mineral belonging to the smectite group. It forms from weathering of volcanic ash, most often in the presence of water. The key characteristic of bentonite is its ability to absorb water and expand. When hydrated, bentonite particles swell and form a gel-like substance with an enormous surface area. This property is known as “swelling” or “thixotropy,” and it is what gives bentonite its remarkable properties.

Bentonite’s unique properties, particularly its swelling capacity and high plasticity, make it valuable in various industrial and environmental applications, ranging from drilling fluids in oil and gas exploration to soil improvement and as a binder in foundry applications.

Property Description
Composition Predominantly composed of montmorillonite clay minerals
Color Typically brown, grey but can vary
Texture Fine, smooth, and powdery when dry; slippery when wet
Plasticity High plasticity, allowing it to form a sticky, cohesive paste
Swelling Capacity Exceptional ability to absorb water and expand
Cation Exchange Capacity High CEC (Cation Exchange Capacity)
pH Typically alkaline (pH greater than 8)
Melting Point Does not melt, but can lose water at high temperatures
Density Low density when dry, high density when hydrated
Chemical Stability Chemically inert, stable in most environments
High Surface Area Bentonite’s layered structure results in a relatively high surface area, which enhances its adsorption and binding capabilities

Industries We Serve

With our exceptional products, we cater to a diverse range of industries, providing innovative solutions for various applications. Our commitment to excellence and dedication to customer satisfaction make us the preferred choice for businesses across the globe.

Cosmetics
Bentonite can be found in cosmetic products like face masks and body wraps for its skin-clarifying and detoxifying properties.
Foundry & Casting
Bentonite is commonly used as a binder in foundry sand to create molds for metal casting. It helps improve mold strength and casting quality.
Drilling and Excavation
In the drilling industry, bentonite is used as a drilling mud additive to control viscosity, provide lubrication, and stabilize boreholes during drilling operations. It's also used in slurry wall construction for excavation support.
Agriculture
Bentonite is used as a soil conditioner and suspending agent for agricultural pesticides and fertilizers. It can improve soil structure and water retention.
Pharmaceuticals
In the pharmaceutical industry, bentonite can be used as an excipient in tablet manufacturing and as a suspending agent in liquid medications.
